Last week, on a beautiful sunny day in Stavanger, we gathered for a highly insightful session led by Simen Moxnes from Equinor, exploring the energy transition and the evolving challenges and opportunities within renewable energy systems.
The discussion provided a broad perspective on how energy systems have evolved over time and what this means for the future. We reflected on historical energy transitions from whale oil to coal, oil and gas, highlighting that these shifts have never been simple replacements but long-term transformations driven by continuous improvements in efficiency and value creation. Despite major transitions, global energy demand has continued to grow in absolute terms.

We touched upon the current energy system, where natural gas continues to play an important role. In this context, Norway remains a key and reliable supplier of gas to Europe, contributing to system stability alongside the gradual scale-up of renewables.
Different future pathways, such as the Stated Policies Scenario based on current implemented policies and the Announced Pledges Scenario assuming full delivery of governments' climate and energy commitments, both point to a gradual and complex transition, where reaching Net-Zero in 2050 remains a challenging but important ambition.
A key takeaway from the session was the importance of system integration and flexibility as electrification accelerates across transport, heat and power, making coordination between technologies, markets and infrastructure increasingly important.

A huge thank you to Simen for the excellent presentation and to all participants for the engaging discussion. We look forward to seeing you at our next event!😊
Sincerely,
EAGE Local Chapter of Stavanger
